Victorian Conservatories

A Victorian Conservatory is probably one of the most common conservatories in today’s public market. You can have many styles, colours and sizes, but one of the most common factors of this type of conservatory is its shape. The shape normally consists of a free bay front, with dwarf wall, glazed windows with top openers and glazed roof with the options of glass or polycarbonate.

The doors can be positioned on any one of the bays, or the straight sides depending upon the individual’s requirements. The most common sizes known in the industry are 3 x 3, 4 x 4, 3 x 4 metres.

Dwarf wall height being at 0.6m, windows 1.5m, giving you a size of 2.1m to the underside of the eaves (ring beam). The size of the ring beam depends on the guttering and glazing system applied. The standard pitch for this type of conservatory is 25 Degrees. The choices of colour range from white, brown through to wood grain. These are industry standards.

Normally as a rule of thumb you do not require planning permission or building regulations for this type of conservatory. If you have 75% glazed material in the roof and 50% glazed material in the sides for building regulations.

Planning Permission depends upon whether or not you have used your permitted development (PD) for the site. This allowance is 50 Cubic Metres for a terraced property and 70 cubic Metres for a semi or detached property. If you have extended your property before then there is a good chance that you have used your permitted development allowance and will require planning permission.
